Best wood for practice swords?
I had previously bought 2 black bokkens and let me say, with an hour of slight use they looked like they got in a bad fight with a shark.
I am now planning on buying a few more swords and tantos, but I dont know which wood is the sturdiest
a link to a website with good quality ones would be most appreciated
ATTENTION: For any “stupid” people out there that I wont mention *cough*D J*cough*……. I am not asking what wood to hit, I am asking an actual sword made of wood, so when I am sparring I dont decapitate my opponent
I’d first advise to read this article
http://www.aikidofaq.com/making/bokken.html
When selecting wood for a bokken do a quick basic strength test. Try and dent it with your nail. Little or no indentation is good anything else usually won’t do. try and bend the wood a little and see how it reacts. Check also the length of fibre the longer the fibre the less chance of it breaking. Traditionally hickory or white or red oak is used. I’ve been looking into a brazilian tropical wood called biriba myself. very flexible and tough as nuts.
