Looking for advice from someone knowledgeable with handguns…?

I will be going to police academy this Janurary and am applying for my gun permit at the present time. Once it clears (which it certainly should) I want to purchase a firearm (something similiar to the pistol police officers use) that I can practice with at the range and become more familiar with. Any suggestions on what I should buy? A friend of the family is retired SWAT officer and now a weapons trainer so I should get all the training I need from him as far as the mechanics of the weapons go. He is currently away at the time, or I would ask him.

If you want to buy a pistol, make sure it’s 40 caliber and it must be duty size (full size). Most departments have strayed away from 9mm due to their poor stopping power. The smartest thing is to wait for what your department will issue you and practice with that weapon.

Get some ‘Snap Caps’ and try some dry fire exercises. Ask the guy at the gun shop what a ‘Snap Cap’ is if you have to. Also ask the family friend to train you to use the weapon as you would on duty, not as SWAT would use it. There is a world of difference between the two uses of firearms.

If this is your first time with a pistol, a good rule of thumb is to always treat the pistol like it is loaded. Don’t ever point it at anyone, even if you’re sure it’s unloaded.
